On this date in 1885 nearly ten thousand people gathered in downtown Atlanta to witness the laying of the cornerstone at the site of the new Georgia capitol building. The construction project would take nearly four years before the building opened in 1889.

On this date in 1922 approximately five thousand people witnessed the last hanging in Atlanta history which occurred outside the Fulton County jail. In December of 1921, Mr. Frank DuPre killed a jewelry store security guard who tried to prevent him from stealing a diamond ring for his girlfriend.
