I am beginning to feel like the FDIC is closing a Georgia bank every week. We lost another one yesterday. On Friday, regulators took over Sandy Springs based RockBridge Commercial Bank making it the 25th bank failure this year. Luckily there is only one more Friday (which is usually takeover day) this year so hopefully this will be the last one bank failure. Defaulting real estate borrowers appears to be the culprit yet again. Let’s hope that 2010 is a much better year for the Atlanta and Georgia banks.

Ignition Alley is a place to come work together and start something big.” They offer various plans to serve occasional visitors to dedicated desk space with 24 / 7 access to the facility. There are conference rooms and even a training room.

While doing some research on our wonderful “neighborhood” of Buckhead today I did some reading on the Buckhead Council of Neighborhoods and found the press release below that I found interesting and informative. It is over a year old now but provides some good information for all of us who desire to keep Buckhead great.

Atlanta, Georgia — While the City of Atlanta geographically defines Buckhead as a conglomeration of 43 individual neighborhoods, most Atlantans refer to Buckhead as a single upscale community north of Midtown. However, until the recent incorporation of The Buckhead Council of Neighborhoods (BCN), there has never been a single organization that addresses and protects the common interests and quality of life issues shared by all of the individual Buckhead neighborhoods. This, coupled with the fact that Buckhead households foot the bill for approximately 45% of Atlanta’s property tax base, yet only represent 15% of all homeowners clearly amplifies the need for such an organization to represent the voice of Buckhead homeowners.*

Participation in The Buckhead Council of Neighborhoods does not alter the way individual neighborhood civic associations operate but, instead, will enhance their influence in the larger arena of local government politics and funding. Since the initial meetings of The Buckhead Council of Neighborhoods this past spring, word has spread quickly and, so far, the BCN has engaged in discussions with 80% of the Buckhead neighborhoods and most have already designated a representative to the BCN. The idea of having a more unified and even stronger voice when tackling such issues as transportation, traffic, community development, government services and other quality of life matters is extremely appealing to individual neighborhoods, which can range in size from a hundred households to thousands of households.

According to Jim King, Chairman of BCN and President of Chastain Park Civic Association, “The formation of this group is long overdue and clearly makes sense for Buckhead. Currently, Buckhead has 43 different neighborhoods recognized by the city. Each of our neighborhoods is focused on its individual concerns and does not have an effective vehicle for making a lot of headway on larger Buckhead-wide issues. We now have an independent forum for homeowners to share common concerns and propose solutions for community betterment. The BCN will empower our neighborhoods to address matters in a more unified and influential manner that will get positive results.”

Since incorporating as a non-profit organization this past summer, The Buckhead Council of Neighborhoods has elected officers, established bylaws and begun addressing such issues as transportation, traffic and the Connect Atlanta Plan. Current monthly meetings take place on the 2nd Thursday at Peachtree Presbyterian Church and are open to Buckhead residents who wish to attend; however, voting is reserved for individual neighborhood representatives.

For more information on The Buckhead Council of Neighborhoods, please contact Jennifer Moyers, Communications: 404-934-8330 or Jennifer@buckheadcouncil.org

August 4, 2009 – Atlanta, Georgia – Buckhead District – Corner of Peachtree Road and Lenox Road

While driving home from work today I noticed a crowd of about 20 people waving flags. Yes, there were a few of the red, white and blue flags that we are accustomed to seeing but the rest of the flags were red, white and green. Some of the people were carrying signs saying such things as “New regime in Iran now” and “Honk for a free Iran”. As I am a fun loving guy I wailed on the horn several times to express my support.

As I passed through the intersection it occurred to me that it is nice to see people caring about what is going on outside our borders for a change and doing something that we take for granted too often which is our rights of free speech and freedom of assembly. Additionally, it is sad to think that these people would have been arrested or beaten or something worse for doing the same thing in Iran.

While returning from my run this morning around the Capital City Golf Course (which by the way is absolutely beautiful after the multi-million dollar renovation), I noticed a collection of several Dekalb County police cars congregated in the Kroger parking lot beside the Starbucks. At first I thought that maybe the officers has simply moved their morning gathering spot from the Dunkin Doughnuts in Brookhaven to the Starbucks. However, I quickly realized I was wrong when I saw that it was a speed trap for cars traveling north on Peachtree as they rounded the corner passing Club Drive. Thus, consider yourself warned.
