Swine Flu / H1N1 Recommendations

On Friday our federal government issued new recommendations for schools, including all schools in Georgia, to help in dealing with the N1H1 (swine flu) during the school year. The secretaries of Health and Human Services, Homeland Security and Education joined the CDC in a Washington to release their guidelines for dealing with swine fly this school year.

While the ultimate decision as to whether to close a school will be made at the local level, the officials said that an effort should be made to “balance the goal of reducing the number of people who become seriously ill or die from influenza with the goal of minimizing social disruption and safety risks to children.” However, it became clear that the Feds believe that the closing of schools should be a rare and last resort alternative.  They stressed that the vaccination, which should be available in October, is the most effective way to reduce the spread of N1H1 and that people aged from six months to twenty-four years will be given priority.

So what should parents of Buckhead or Atlanta school children do with this information from the federal government?  We don’t want to scare the children so you should stress that swine flu is similar to getting the regular flu.  Thus, tell them to keep their hands out of their mouth and away from their face.  Hand sanitizer is a wise investment and they should keep it in their desk or locker.  Finally, remind your children to wash their hands frequently.  Please stay tuned and we’ll bring you any further information as it becomes available from the Georgia, Atlanta or Buckhead school authorities.
